If you have more than one child, it’s important that you treat them all equally alike — especially when it comes to their birthdays.
Forgetting a child’s birthday can be a traumatic experience, especially if you made a big deal for your other children’s birthday. It’s not something you want to miss.
Reserve the Date
While most parents will always remember the date each of their children was born, sometimes other things in life can distract you. So it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan.
At the beginning of each year, post a calendar in a centralized location in your home, such as on the wall of your kitchen or playroom. Use bright markers to record each child’s birthday in the appropriate box on the calendar.
Not only will this remind you of each of your child’s upcoming birthdays, but it also will create anticipation in your children as they look forward to their special day — as well as those of their siblings.
Create Consistency in Celebrating Birthdays
Children may be naive, but they aren’t stupid. So if you spend a lot of time, effort and money celebrating one child’s birthday, they are going to be expecting you to do the same for theirs. If you fall short, it could affect their self-image.
That’s why it’s always a good idea to create a sort of standardized birthday celebration. If you are hosting a party, invite the same number of guests and always have it in the same place.
Feature the same elements at every party, whether it’s a bounce house rental, a birthday cake, gifts, or other activities. Try to keep it consistent for every child so that there is no jealousy.
Remember, if you do something different or special for one child, you will have to remember to do the same thing for all of your kids. It’s only fair and they will be paying attention!
